UPDATE: PSA Group announces return of Opel cars to Russia

(Adds details in last 2 paragraphs)

MOSCOW, Feb 26 (PRIME) -- France’s Peugeot-Citroen (PSA Group) will return the Opel brand to the Russian market, PSA Group said in a statement on Tuesday.

“The Group’s aim is to increase its sales outside Europe by 50% by 2021 and to position its brands in new markets: Peugeot in North America, Citroen in India and Opel in Russia, while enhancing… international footprint,” according to a statement published on the official website.

Opel cars have not been sold in Russia since 2015. Earlier, the cars were assembled on Russian plants in St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad.

CEO of PSA Group in Russia Alexei Volodin told channel Rossiya 24 that the company has plans to restart local production of Opel cars.

“We know for sure and we realize that to be a successful car producer and importer in Russia, we doubtlessly need to produce cars in Russia with a high localization level. We are preparing within ourselves (in PSA Group) plans of local production under the Opel brand,” Volodin said.
